FRONTMAN/FOUNDING MEMBER IBRAHIM AG ALHABIB RETURNS TO NORTH AMERICA WITH TINARIWEN. Perhaps the most recognizable member of touareg band Tinariwen, Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, has been unable to join his fellow bandmates on their most recent North American tours. World Village is pleased to announce that he will join them this month and in March for the group’s concerts in the U.S. and Canada. Check out the tour here. I might have to get myself to one of those Chicago shows.

Leroy Powell and the Messengers new release ATLANTIS has those moments I treasure in an album, surprises. It has tough rock-N-roll tracks that reminded me why I love it, and deep drifter blues tunes that put me in the boots of the shoveler at final resting time…there are sweet-like country-esque ballads that move the sweet side of those of us with a heart (that has some twists in it). The delivery on Leroy Powell’s work this time around with the Messengers reeks of the truth as someone has lived it…the words come out of him so believable that at times you feel like you are riding next to him in a van on a cross country tour, as he remembers long lost tales of days gone by and things that once happened. I believe as you listen into this album you’ll too find that moment of surprise, as it is somewhere between the words and the notes.

Harmonyville Records is proud to release: PROJECT Trio’s third studio recording – a self-titled album that continues the ensemble’s unique and heralded musical exploration. Based in Brooklyn, PROJECT Trio emerged from a classical background, but has found an unconventional and energetic voice through the exploration of unique performance techniques. Their obsession with program versatility and contrast of musical style is executed by Flutist Greg Pattillo, Cellist Eric Stephenson, and Double Bassist Peter Seymour. Simply put, their music synthesizes Hip-hop, Rock, Bluegrass, Americana, Jazz, and Classical music to create their truly distinctive sound. Pattillo, Stephenson and Seymour’s roots can be traced back over 13 years to when they met at the Cleveland Institute of Music. After working with famed ensembles including the Cleveland Orchestra and the Houston Symphony, PROJECT Trio got its first big break in 2006 when Pattillo’s groundbreaking beatbox flute videos were featured on youtube showcasing a key part of the group’s signature sound. After 40 million views, PROJECT Trio’s youtube channel, “Freedomworksfilms”, has amassed a following of over 45,000 subscribers. I first listened to this release with a room full of kids and they were the first to recognize the Brubeck track from their own collections at home and we were all hooked on the changes and immediaely I knew this cd was going to be a winner with me. Which will translate nicely into selected airplay and sets of music build right around pieces to create a set of music that Project Trio would be glad to be a part of.

For Dr. Zinn, activism was a natural extension of the revisionist brand of history he taught. “A People’s History of the United States” (1980), his best-known book, had for its heroes not the Founding Fathers — many of them slaveholders and deeply attached to the status quo, as Dr. Zinn was quick to point out — but rather the farmers of Shays’ Rebellion and union organizers of the 1930s. As he wrote in his autobiography, “You Can’t Be Neutral on a Moving Train” (1994), “From the start, my teaching was infused with my own history. I would try to be fair to other points of view, but I wanted more than ‘objectivity’; I wanted students to leave my classes not just better informed, but more prepared to relinquish the safety of silence, more prepared to speak up, to act against injustice wherever they saw it. This, of course, was a recipe for trouble.”…..and that I think is why so many of us have a special spot in our hearts for Howard Zinn, and may we all live up to the lessons he taught us and the reason we hold him in such an admired state. Whether he was thinking or speaking for us, or saying and doing the things we always wished we had the willpower to attempted, I am not quite sure, I just know that he is hero material (for me) in a world of few choice.

Oh Yeah, Yo La Tengo

I have been listening to the ample selections that Yo La Tengo has put out over the years for quite some time now, sharing much on the radio show but this was my first chance to catch the trio from Hoboken. The crowd at the Barrymore was strong in numbers and there was a surplus of cool in the room as the band mixed their sometimes softer calming side (often accompanied with acoustic music) with a moment or two of punked out quickies and my favorite of their work are those psychedelic rock jams that get filled with space and last over seven minutes. So many tunes carry a heavy bass that a heartbeat and pulse formed from the stage……The trio often shows its flexibility as drummer Georgia sings and strums as well as kicking it behind the kit. Ira Kaplan keeps the vibe alive on keys and really sets you back some with his guitar jams and sound exploration while James McNew really was spot on with his bassin’. All three members carry steady harmonies and together, I would surely agree that They’ve got it. They ended the evening with two encores. The first a fine rendtion of a Fairport Convention tune and the final song was a beautifully haunting Velvet Underground sound. After the show had a quick chance to chat with Ira about, well…what else, you guessed it…baseball. So, when the time presents itself again, I will go…Yo La Tengo.

On Sunday January 24th from 3-9pm CST at the Barrymore Theatre, join the Gomers, Honor Among Thieves, Sean Michael Dargan Band, the Stellanovas with Chris Wagoner & Mary Gaines, members of the Piper Road Spring Band and Mr. Tony Brown & the 608 Riddim Section. These musicians from Madison will be putting those in need ahead of themselves, as i have learned is certainly an ongoing trend around these parts.

It’s not like Haiti hasn’t been a nation in need for some time now, it is just now more people are noticing.

R.I.P. Teddy Pendergrass

Teddy Pendergrass, who became R&B’s reigning sex symbol in the 1970s & ’80s with his forceful, masculine voice and passionate love ballads,later becoming an inspirational figure after suffering a devastating car accident that left him paralyzed, died Wednesday at age 59. Mr. Pendergrass suffered a spinal cord injury and was paralyzed from the waist down in the 1982 car accident. He spent six months in a hospital but returned to recording the next year with the album “Love Language.” He returned to the stage at the Live Aid concert in 1985, performing from his wheelchair. He later founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, an organization whose mission is to encourage and help people with spinal chord injuries achieve their maximum potential in education, employment, housing, productivity and independence, according to its Web site. He gained popularity first as a member of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes on songs including “If You Don’t Know Me by Now,” but it was his solo hits that brought him his greatest fame. With songs such as “Love T.K.O.,” “Close the Door” and “I Don’t Love You Anymore,” he came to define a new era of black male singers with his powerful, aggressive vocals that spoke to virility, not vulnerability. His lyrics were never coarse, as those of later male R&B stars would be, but they had a sensual nature that bordered on erotic without being explicit. “Turn Off the Lights” was a tune that perhaps best represented the many moods of Teddy Pendergrass — tender and coaxing yet strong as the song reached its climax. He made women swoon with each note, and his concerts were a testament to that adulation, with infamous stories of women throwing their underwear on stage for his affection.

The sneaky slugs seem to have stolen the genes that enable this skill from algae that they’ve eaten. The genre-bending duo’s first release, Why Not Now, drew on a unique blend of New Age, R&B, gospel, and Sanskrit chant influences. All Bliss has an even more eclectic, exciting palette, adding rock, pop, jazz and world music styles. “Get Together” is a fresh version of the Youngbloods’ classic hit. “Peace and Joy,” a tribute to John Lennon, echoes the sound of the Beatles. “Soul Song” and “Walking in the Bliss” are structured like chants, using repetition and a hypnotic beat to induce an uplifted trance state. “Shivaya” is literally adapted from a powerful Sanskrit chant. “Be Yourself” is a song with a pop feel and a non-conformist message, while “Mostly Love” evokes the smooth style of the Brazilian jazz singer Sad?. The lyrics for the reflective “Always Near” are adapted from a poem by the Indian teacher Yogananda. “I believe all music is spiritual,” says Narayan. “and these songs are infused with the realism of our shared spiritual journey.” I have found this sound to calm both myself and those around me as I have shared as background and soon over the airwaves and I believe this sound will transition beautifully from smooth to space.

Willie Mitchell, who shaped the elegant yet gritty sound of Al Green, Ann Peebles and other stars of soul music as the house producer at Hi Records in the 1960s and ’70s, died Tuesday in Memphis, where he lived. He was 81. The Willie Mitchell sound — prominent horns, delicately strummed guitars, some sweet organ and a steady, straightforward beat — is instantly recognizable on records by singers like Mr. Green, Ms. Peebles, Syl Johnson and O. V. Wright, and on the instrumentals Mr. Mitchell recorded as a bandleader. Both raw and sensuous, it became Hi’s signature sound as the label rose to prominence with Mr. Green in the 1970s. Although its legacy has been less celebrated than those of Stax or Sun, two other pioneering record labels that got started in Memphis in the 1950s, Hi was an integral part of the development of the Memphis soul sound, and Mr. Mitchell is widely credited as one of its architects.

R.I.P. Vic Chesnutt

In a two-decade career, Vic Chesnutt sang darkly comic and often disarmingly candid songs about death, vulnerability, and life’s simple joys. A car accident when he was 18 left him partly paralyzed, but he has said that the accident focused him as a musician and a poet. “It was only after I broke my neck and even like maybe a year later that I really started realizing that I had something to say,” he said in a recent radio interview with Terry Gross. Discovered in the late 1980s by Michael Stipe of R.E.M., who produced his first two albums, he has been a mainstay in independent music, collaborating with the bands Lambchop and Widespread Panic. In 1996 his songs were performed by Madonna, the Indigo Girls, Smashing Pumpkins, R.E.M. and others for “Sweet Relief II: The Gravity of the Situation,” an album that benefited the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, a nonprofit group that offers medical support for musicians. Recently he had had a burst of creativity, releasing two albums in 2009, “At the Cut” and “Skitter on Take-Off.” In the song, “Flirted With You All My Life,” off “At the Cut,” he sings about suicide, which he had attempted several times….and apparently finally had success if he was ready, or not.

R.I.P. James Gurley

In the summer of 1965, Chet Helms brought James to 1090 Page Street to meet Peter Albin and Sam Andrew. James proved to be the missing component to the embryonic Big Brother and the Holding Company. A charismatic figure, James immediately developed a large and devoted following. Many came to the Big Brother shows simply to experience his loud and passionate guitar playing. James was looked upon by his fans as something of a spiritual leader. His innovative trailblazing style did not go unnoticed by his contemporaries in San Francisco. Mickey Hart first heard James playing in the Matrix in 1966. Hart remembers; “I’d never seen anything like it. It was magnificent, the best solo I’d ever heard. The amplifier was just pulsing on the floor”. Barry Melton said, “James Gurley was the first man in space! He’s the Yury Gagarin of Psychedelic guitar”. James was a fusionist in the truest sense of the word. Along with his “weird” blend of blues, country, western and jazz, James employed a finger picking style that he used all the way through the Cheap Thrills sessions. With his guitar mate Sam Andrew, they produced some of the best Psychedelic guitar solos in history. Guitar Player magazine recently listed James’ and Sam’s work on “Summertime” as one of the top ten Psychedelic solos. Along with his work with Big Brother, James has been involved in a number of independent projects. He has recorded with New Age drummer, Muruga and has also been actively involved in writing and recording some very innovative solo work. In May of 1997 James stopped touring with Big Brother to devote his full attention to these projects. The first offering is entitled “Pipe Dreams” and was released in January of 2000. Now, more than thirty-five years after introducing his pioneering style, James is still a marvel and a mystery to watch. One recent concert goer noted; “I love loud weird guitar a la Hendrix, Santana and so on, and on that night what James was doing completely floored me. I have no idea what he was doing to make those sounds. Incredible!” But what else would one expect from the “Father of Psychedelic Guitar”.

The Hour of Two Lights

by Terry Hall & Mushtaq, released in 2003 on the Honest Jons Record label. Terry Hall and Mushtaq’s album couldn’t be more in tune with this time period’s headlines, fusing the Jewish and Arabic musical cultures which draws upon the duo’s own lineage — Terry Hall being a Polish refugee with a Jewish background and Mushtaq being a Middle Eastern Muslim. In some ways, the album is a return to Terry Hall’s musical roots (The Specials’ breakthrough hit “Gangsters” was based around a Middle Eastern-influenced melody).But, together with Mushtaq, the album breaks bold new ground by creating a stunning topical tapestry of music. This melting pot of sounds features Jewish Gypsy music (from the group Romani Rad), a Mongolian throat singer, an Egyptian violinist, an Algerian rapper, a Turkish percussionist, a Syrian oud player, an Arabian pianist, and a Jewish Clarinet player whose resume includes being a sessions musician on the original “Pink Panther” theme! Even Blur & Gorillaz front man Damon Albarn provides guest vocals and instrumentation. The Hour Of Two Lights is truly a visionary record of extraordinary boldness in which music, politics and humanity are fused as one. And it always seems that the time is NOW to try to fuse humanity and politics together and if music can make a difference….it might start with music like this.

Trance Groove

By The Julien Kasper Band. I have been spinning music mad by Julien Kasper for many years now and I am once again struck with the sounds put forth on his latest release Trance Groove on Toulcat Records. The nine tracks are filled with personality where needed and some rock as desired. There are some extra jams on the Hammond B-3 Organ by Matt Jenson & T Lavitz that add a certain warmth to their respected tracks making me gravitate to “The Reverend” & “Riff 53″ (featuring Jenson) as well as “Chupacabra” and the soft spoken “Carolina Rose” (featuring Lavitz). There are two tracks that are the heavier hitters on the album for my radio ear, “Trash Day” & “Milk Truck” have edges that cut a path right into my ear-ways paved and rolled by Julien on guitar, Zac Casher on drums and Jesse Williams on electric/acoustic upright bass. As always, it is a thrill to listen to and even more thrilling is to be able to share the music of Julien Kasper in my little radio world.

Lovespirals:Future Past

The latest release from Lovespirals has me softly speaking to myself and smiling. The slow grooves help me feel like I am skating along carelessly over the ice that sometimes makes its way on our clear travels. The trance sensation produced in this release from Anji Bee and Ryan Lum, is stunningly captivating and a welcomed distraction to listening to music. The down tempo music and vocal temptations seduce the parts of my ears that are connected right to the part of my brain that produces happiness. There are highlight on this album for me personally, “Meanwhile, Irreplaceable Time Flees” right into “Insignificant” really make a set more complete, whereas the opening track “Home” is such a great set starter. This is a classy album that at times I think is even too good for me, but that is why I am so happy to share it with others….I think it’ll find many compatible ear-mates out there.

What can you say about the line up other than stellar. The cold outside was no match for what was happening inside the Congress Theater in Chicago, as the 2nd Annual Chicago Bluegrass and Blues Festival was in full effect. Eddy Clearwater gave me what I was looking for in the way of that true original Chicago Blues styling, been waiting a long time to catch his act, well worth it. The Emmitt Nershi Band has my attention since I started slinging tracks off their new album, they left me with a down-home goodness feeling, that strings like theirs tend to do. I stomped my feet and felt a giant Yee Haw brewing up for most of their set…..reminded me of days by the barn as a youngin’. Dr. Dog was the act i had never seen that was tops on my list for getting a taste of, and i was not disappointed. I can certainly appreciate the direction that the music is taking and I must admit, at times it felt like the music was made entirely for the day that it was being played on. From the “I didn’t see that coming” file, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones with Tuvan Throat Singing group, The Alash Ensemble, doing tracks from their latest holiday release and man, this was something else…no really….the experience made me wonder how the decision was made to intersect these two styles into a holiday festival of it’s very own. The hearty earthy richness of Bela’s Banjo mixed with the soul drenching, hold me captive with that sound, Tuvan Throat singing is a match made for, well, my ears for certain. And well, you know the deal with those Flecktones…the unique spirit they conjure up is at times unexplainable and always worth being there for.

Remember the days of walking down the streets with the boombox position high upon your shoulder, pointing the tunes right into your ear….well here is something you’d like to do that with again,and they call themselves “BOOMBOX”. BoomBox is Producer/Engineer/DJ/Drummer Russ Randolph and Producer/DJ/Vocalist/Guitarist Zion Rock Godchaux. This pair of dynamic artists uses their rich musical history and their vision of music and popular culture to deliver a style of music distinctly different from anything heard or seen in music today. This signature sound and show brings live music to a new, elevated level. BoomBox evolved through the common visualization of two forward-thinking artists from diverse musical backgrounds. Raised by supportive and musically inclined parents, both Godchaux and Randolph had an obsession with music at very young ages. Godchaux, who grew up with deeply embedded rock and roll roots, began playing drums at the age of two, and played guitar and wrote his own songs as a teen. During the 90s, Godchaux was a well-received touring DJ based out of the San Francisco area. Randolph began as a young drummer, but it’s what was happening behind the scenes that attracted him most. As much producers as they are musicians, it is Randolph’s understanding of soundscape and Godchaux’s knack for songwriting that keeps BoomBox resonating at higher levels…and now, this grand duo is making a splash as they rock & roll electroland-like through the musical world of their own that they created….it might seem like the path less chosen until you get an ear full.

Illustrious Cuban singer Omara Portuondo has made history twice this year. In October, the remarkable vocalist, and only female star of the Buena Vista Social Club™, became one of the first Cuban artists in six years to obtain a visa to perform in the U.S., marking a cultural breakthrough in the strained relations between her homeland and the U.S. On November 5, she also became the first Cuban resident to present at the 10th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, where she delivered the prestigious Song of The Year award. She was honored again as the winner for Best Contemporary Tropical Album or “Mejor Álbum Tropical Contemporáneo” with her latest release Gracias produced by Montuno Productions and released on World Village. Although Portuondo is a four-time Latin GRAMMY nominee, and won a “Prémio Música Brasileira” Brazilian Music Award last year for her duets album with Maria Bethania, as well as a Billboard Latin Music Award in 2005, this is her first GRAMMY award. Gracias was produced by Alê Siqueira, with musical direction from Swami Jr., and it features “some striking collaborations” (Songlines), with such guest artists as Jorge Drexler, Richard Bona, Cachaíto López, Chico Buarque and Chucho Valdés. It is a special gift from the artist to herself and to the songwriters for whom she feels the highest regard. As the Montreal Gazette writes, it is “a highly personal collection of ballads… she packs a lot of feeling into this tender and nostalgic album.” These are the songs she has always longed to sing.

The Lalo Loor Dry Forest and El Pahuma Orchid Reserve are two examples of our lands-in-private-hands approach, which empower local people to successfully manage their own resources. Ecuador is one of the world’s most biodiverse countries, so every penny raised in the US has an enormous conservation impact there. Tonight’s terrific entertainment line-up will start at 8:00pm. Old Crow Medicine Show

The Barrymore Theatre has been my one time a week stop, this time for more twang and stringed instrumentation. Old Crow Medicine Show gave the sold out crowd a “humdinger” of two sets. Raucous Bluegrass and country rock, jams into fiddle psychedelia lead the evening into a that feeling I had when first drinking beers in the back woods where only the four-wheel drive equipped vehicles could get you in and out. The music of this night gave me a sense of my youth as it is still being tamed by my adult (some would say) life. I have been spinning these guys on my show since I began some 6 years ago and would easily bump several acts in the similar vein to the side over if they were around playing. The gig is more than a gig, it is a hoe-down party built for overalls and smiles, flannel shirts and tie dyed skirts……It was nice to hear the variety in their on stage “twangings” and the variety in the crowd.

Took a Trip on Railroad Earth

It has been many years since I was told I should check out Railroad Earth doing their thing live and each time something either came up or it just never worked out….well, this time I made sure to make sure I was there and I was not disappointed. There is something to their “jamgrass rock” that really gets me feelin’ more than alright. While I missed the opening act of Vince Herman’s Great American Taxi this time around to watch baseball, I am sure that the billing of there two acts made so much sense (after all I caught G.A.T’s set last time around), and drew the right kind of crowd for each set…certainly I couldn’t get enough of that down home feeling I was getting from the people in attendance. I love the fiddle, I love the mandolin and I love rockin’….so put those three things together and you got such a trip on the Railroad Earth that you don’t care to know where or when your stop arrives. For their part, RRE kicked it into overdrive towards the end of their first set and the explosiveness continued when they returned to the stage, leaving me to ask myself, “What took you so long to get to one of their shows?” And I am now able to say simply…FINALLY.

The newest Flight of the Conchords from HBO and Sub Pop Records is as charming as the boys themselves. I know what you’re thinking…isn’t is dangerous to invite Brett and Jermaine into your home, or for a long car trip….but I think these thirteen tracks are sure to make you think differently and often chuckle out-loud wherever you might be listening in. From “Sugarlumps” to “You don’t have to be a Prostitute”, the catchy pop of Flight of the Conchords‘ “I Told You I Was freaky” makes me want to say thank you in special ways to the person who introduced me to the show and the music that oozes out of these goofy lads.

Makes me happy to have ears. Improv Jazz that takes improvisation and twists it anew into something not only heard, but into a figure at times, a shape or form. This music keeps me guessing and wanting to be a part of a this in a live setting. Of course Wadada Leo Smith takes the trumpet to all levels of new and beyond, and i mean deep in the portions of my mind where my ears must have dug a secret tunnel, this trumpet sound found a place to gather…allowing me extra time to digest and think it through. The Golden Quintet was recorded live at Vision XIII in June of 2008 and features Vijay Iyer on piano/synthesizer, John Lindberg on bass and Pheeroan AkLaff on drums. The Organic portions was recorded live in New Haven at Firehouse 12 in April of 2009. Featuring Michael Gregory on electric guitar, Brandon Ross on electric guitar, Nels Cline on 6/12 string electric guitar, Okkyung Lee on cello, Skuli Sverrisson on electric bass, John Lindberg on acoustic bass and Pheeroan AkLaff on drums.

JULIAN MARLEY & THE UPRISING featuring STEPHEN MARLEY “AWAKE” NORTH AMERICAN TOUR 2009 hit Madison at the Barrymore and was there a feeling of unity inside the walls. The conscious awareness of the music made it easy to get immersed in the positive vibe Julian brings around with him, and shares in the message of his lyrics and the island rhythms of the band. The crowd was diverse and never divided as we were always under the guide of the Rastafarian spirit as it too was AWAKE with this night’s uprising. Featuring many tracks off the new album, the songs were traveling throughout the hall on the wings of smoke and gladly they collided with a couple of Bob Marley classics~because after all, why not start from the beginnings. With a few songs left for the night, Stephen joined on stage and the electricity of that collaboration took off with more power than any man made facility could conjure up, the attitude & altitude of the performance was on the rise..

…the bouncing, the smiling and the IRIE feelings were the bond that kept this night’s unity alive and breathing. It was a time when Reggae music came to life as Autumn has been ready to change to Winter, and this show helped keep a little summer time in my mind.

I have been playing tracks off of “Jazz Around the Globe” for a few weeks now, I feel like I know this album through and through and it has given me time to remember that this thing we all love, music… is everywhere. There are some incredible jazz journeys to speak of and it is so nice to feel as if the captured tunes on a compilation fill the space….after all..space is the place. For me the eleven tracks relay the inner beat of the globe, as felt from the feet upward. The Kora Jazz Trio and Sherele as well as Keletigui Diabate w/Habib Koite & Bamada and Hugh Masekela featuring Malaika leave footprints within me that jazz music’s wind cannot wipe away. To no surprise, I was especially blown away with the song “Destinos” performed by the jazz fusion drummer great Mr. Billy Cobham with Asere….the song was written by trumpter Michel Padron, who is the featured soloist on the track. My words won’t do this album justice…it’s one for your shelves.

As is (and part of me can’t believe I am saying this) “A Family Christmas” also released by Putumayo. I am not one for the sap that flows musically from the Christmas song tree, but this collection is has itself a festive takes on some Christmas classics, most of which families have passed down global from generation to generation. Add the shake of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s “Is zat you Santa Claus?” and the rattle of Leon Redbone’s “Let it Snow” mixed with the roll of The Christmas Jug Band featuring Angela Strehli & Maria Muldaur and stir it all up with the sweetness of Sam Bush’s version of “Sleigh Ride” and you have got yourself all the makings of a happy holiday season…..and a perfect stocking stuffer!!

From our friends at Cuneiform comes a new release that has a grip on me right after the first listening. To be honest, after playing one track on the show, I had three phone calls asking for some insight as to what Zevious is all about. Mike Eber on Guitars, Johnny DeBlase on electric & upright bass and Jeff Eber on drums make a sound at times that is electric jazzed punk and at other times the odd metered groove filled jam-scapes reveal a new fusion unlike most I’ve tried before. There are moments in this album that I want to re-live, at different times to see how I hear it at that moment. Can’t wait to find the right emotions for each track, it hits me just right!!!!

It was a Friday night and I was feeling alright!!! EOTO was back in town and with that spontaneity Jason & Travis create, the vibe was way out there. The 18+ crowd was deep in numbers and deeper in their groove. The sonic sounds were immeasurably gigantic in ways only retold by stories, moments unique to the time be shared by those in the room (on this night the fantastic High Noon Saloon was the room). You cannot help but feel the newness of the seconds as the flurry of sound passes by you and circles back for a second nibble on your ears, I just found myself smiling and remembering what it is about live music that I love. When Jason and I chatted last week, he nailed it on the head~the explorations are rewarded with nights like this one. I am sure when EOTO is in your neck of the woods and if you take the time to find out~you might share this common with many yet, the show might just hold you captive to yourself and you’ll have no reason to want to be released. New York’s Sub Swara took the stage first and was mixing beats that brought the right attitude of harmony and danceable tunes into our togetherness on this night. This was one of those live electronica events that took the new level and had it re-sized and made the evening’s morning come a lot sooner than expected….

Dirty Dozen Brass Band

It’s always nice to get to hang out with good people…and that is exactly what happened on this night. On a cool drizzly evening at the Memorial union got the chance to hang out with some of the gang of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band before the show and during the opening acts set…It was a blast to chill with the real people of the music world, talking about times and music with guys who have seen it all and been doing it so long. Efrem, Kevin and Jermal were all cool to chill with and then the set that followed brought it all home. The brass was solid and heavy sounding for most of the show and there were moments and dance, scream and even space out. The march-ability of the music made for some serious dancing and groovin’ from many a head & body bobber and fan of that sweet N’Orleans flava, that only the DDBB can stir into a gravy of sound. The funk was in the air, and the soul of the band fits here in Madtown perfectly and I am guessing the band will like to head on back..maybe even get some outside summer terrace time?

With the release of the new album, One day in Brooklyn (actually put together in one day…in Brooklyn) I was so looking forward to see what the boys from Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey would have going on this time in a live setting. As the crowd started to grow with each stroke on the keys, Brian Haas and gang really had the sound thumping in a strut that was walking all over me. Doing tracks off of the new album as well as some Brian informed us in our chat Saturday morning, some that were written during the traveling on this tour. He wasn’t kidding at all when he said ‘there was a lot of creativity going on in the group right now’. The hour long set was a journey of emotional music, rockin’ slides and percussion 7 bass that has your head nodding in approval the whole time. There was even time to throw in a well crafted rendition of an old Beatles classic.

Mike Gordon did what I would expect Mike Gordon to do….played 2 long sets into the early hours with all the jamband sounds that any kitchen cupboard could hold. The Barrymore Theatre pond was filled with many a Phish-head and the scene was as much fun to watch as was the band for me. A ripping guitarist (Scott Murawski) was the real treat for me during the sets….

It is not very often that I feel like a band is becoming like family here in Madison, but Marseilles’ Watcha Clan sure is more than just another group visiting. Since they came here this summer for Le Fete de Marquette, they seem to have a second home right here at anytime. On this night, the Crystal Corner was the location that was fortunate to hold the sounds of Watcha Clan’s immense soul….there was spirit in the air~not just beats or lyrics but a conscious being formed with the music. Between the on stage musicians there is more chemistry than in a high school science class, like they were meant to make this happen. It is so easy to become part of the essence of this act. I find myself memorized by the grooves, the heavy and the softened down…..the true nature of this scene is something to behold and hold on tightly too. There is more to this band then genre or style…as they defeat and deflect the two of those like an unknown superhero of “eclecticity”…..it is the “real” that is behind the artists and the “strength” around their art that is such a temptress~that I look forward to the next time I find Watcha Clan is back for one more time. This band means a lot to the part of me that transcends the sound….with them come nostalgia.

Luminescent Orchestrii/Fishtank Ensemble

For me, I feel like the Luminescent Orchestrii are old friends. I have been spinning their music on my show since way back in my WHUS days after we reached out to each other on one of the social networking sites. I finally got to experience them live and it was all that I hoped for. Witty ways on stage coupled with well crafted songs of a gypsy decent……makes for such an entertaining start to the evening. Luckily we here in Madison have a way of dancing our way through it all…and this was certainly the case at the High Noon Saloon. The rawness of the songs feel good on your skin and with an edge of sass, the music makes its way to your spine…and from there it’s up to you what the rest of you does.

On this night, the pairing of bands was stellar. Fishtank Ensemble took over the stage shortly after and wowed the crowd with bass stands, opera singing saw-stress and a violin that was hauntingly mesmerizing. The sounds were often as wild as the night is dark but on occasion I felt the “where it’s at” of the tune….and that moment is always something else. The dancing continued and the music from start to finish on this night was like the mighty rivers—fluid and strong.

Hanggai & Cheb i Sabbah

Talk about pieces to a puzzle…..Hanggai Band from Mongolia and Cheb i Sabbah from the mixed up world of sound smashing….I started my afternoon off with some homegrown beer and a musical group from Inner Mongolia…..Don’t let the traditional clothes worn fool you, this band shows off many Western influences in a set that rocked with sound as it did with amazement. Seeing the faces of those not so familiar with throat singing was a highlight for me, the jaws dropping as sounds coming from deep within form and appear almost without recognition of who or where they come from. The vocalizing added to the two string lute (tabshuur) gave this act at the World Stage of the Willy Street Fair that something different people around here seek.

After wandering some around the fair streets, I decided to chill before going out to see Cheb i Sabbah later in the evening. That was a smart idea as I grooved and got down until the wee hours with some serious mixes from a master. Cheb had crowds surrounding him on the stage, belly dancers moving in a serpentine-like fashion around the dance floor and stage areas-it was as it should be….WILD. The crowd was deep in movement and size as the Terrace was in a complete zone of electronica-hoopee madness, one that I sure hope returns again sometime soon. It was worth the wait to be a part of a Cheb i Sabbah created soundscape.

Forro in the Dark has a new release with the national Geographic people called “Light a Candle” & the legendary Os Mutantes has a new release on the Anti label (of course they’d get it) entitled “Haih or Amortecedor”. Now while I totally recommend these release for me at this time in my moments of listening, I merely want to let you know they exist….They will be part of the show on & off and I believe they are albums that’ll play nicely with others.

I am not one for the on the scene interviews but when that is all that works I am down for sure. DJ Rekha is serious about what she is doing, and how she portraits her seriousness is with some killer Bhangra beats that explore not only the inner regions of the ears, but it certainly filters through my brain simultaneously. Watching her work the segues and slam the hefty beats that “speakerbang” and erupt the dancefloor with unique blends of movement that causes me to get my notepad out. Opening the night was DJ Phil Money, who highlighted my night with some sweet “Pimps of Joytime” with a middle mix of some of Jah’s music….it was a night that lasted long~like you hope for.

Being a Red Sox fan doesn’t stop me from recognizing greatness. Derek Jeter represents baseball the right way and I am proud to have watched his career blossom, proud to have rooted against him and happy he is on top of this incredible honor in the big leagues. The Yankees are no doubt a historic franchise, and with this honor—DJ is stil barely in the conversation when talking about the top 5 Yankees of all time. The sounds of a crowd, and an opponent cheering on a major accomplishment, is music to my ears. GO SOX.

Took a few hours on this beautiful Sunday afternoon to head downtown to the capitol square and enjoyed some of the tasty treats Madison has to offer. The annual Taste of Madison was something not to be missed. Seems I like beer mostly, with a Capitol Brewery Wheat being the beverage of choice. There was a good sized crowd circling the capitol with opportunities to see a few different musical acts, and to try any variety of a varieties of treats~from Brats and cheese curds to Indonesia or Ethiopian fare, desserts or meals, sides or the aforementioned BEER.

There has been a week solid of G-rate weather and the sounds of summer were ringing and singing true on this day…Click on the above thumbs to get a better view.

Snake on the Lake Festival

My home away from home, WSUM 91.7 FM, Madison’s Student Radio station, returns to the Memorial Union Terrace on September 4th for their third annual Snake on the Lake Music Festival. After the success of last years acts, which featured Tortoise, Damien Jurado, Awesome Color, and a number of others, this year audiences can look forward to another all-star lineup and one amazing show! Performing at this year’s festival will be RJD2, Hollywood Holt & Million $ Mano, Maritime, Free Energy, and Yourself and the Air. Local favorites The Nod will kick things off at 4pm and sets by WSUM’s very own DJs will be interspersed between acts. The festival is free to the public and in the case of bad weather will be moved to der Rathskeller.

Orton Park Day 2

Once again I got out for two acts on this beautiful Sunday late afternoon into evening. First up for me were the Cash Box Kings Chicago Revue and this year they brought along with them some of our favorite performers like consummate guitarist/ vocalist Lurrie Bell, silky smooth songstress Katherine Davis and rock solid drummer Kenny “Beady Eyes” Smith. Nick Moss and Piano Willie will join us for the first time. A musician of boundless skill, Nick Moss fully understands that he is carrying on the tradition of the bluesmen before his time and folks let me tell you, he Chicago Rips it up. I have listen to and shared his music on the show in the past but live and watching is the way to fully appreciate him.Piano Willie honed his craft with the likes of Jimmy Rogers, James Cotton, and William Clarke and you can see right away way those named would choose him as a colleague. He rocks like Spann, he rolls like nobody’s business but most of all he is just too cool.

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue totally blew down the treehouse….The funk started and didn’t stop until the night had fallen and the stars took over. I can’t say enough about Troy’s set of music. The whole band is apart of a show that is all out, from shaking their collective booTAYS, to bass players body surfing backwards on the stage while JAMMing, it was the way to end this festival and I would never complain if it ended any event. The outdoors was a wonderful way to watch people connect to this young New Orleans artist sound and spirit, from Marvin Gaye to a 2nd line through the festival goers on their home turf, it was that which you might be thinking and more. It is always incredible when you can match an artist to an area, and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue are really an extension of the east side of Madison. I and many are looking forward to the next visit and are thankful Troy made it our way to close out the Orton Park Festival.

Orton Park Festival I

This was one time I had too much reality happening to be at this festival all day, however I managed to see everything I wanted to hit up. Brooklyn- based Latin alt-folklorico group Pistolera strutted their stuff in front of a medium sized but ready to “get it going” Orton crowd. They were rained out at the Waterfront Fest last year, but did put on a great rain-delayed show at the Crystal, and this year the weather was not playing a long nicely either but the set was incredible with melodic and danceable songs sung in Spanish and the strong political content of their lyrics which often talk about border issues, the plight of immigrants, and female strength is “perfecto” for the open minds of the east side of Madison.

After that hot set, we were treated to the brilliant and prolific Robbie Fulks and his music. His website states, “Robbie Fulks writes songs that make you think and feel and quite often laugh out loud.” He’s a favorite at our fests and when he takes the stage with his band there will be a throng of people there to cheer him on. His charm and incredible songbook make Fulks an ideal festival performer…Since it was Michael Jackson’s birthday, Mr. Fulks did this rendition on “Billy Jean” that was deep and mysterious, it was truly a mind blowing moment…and I thank him for. he took that right into the Jackson 5 thing know as “Goin’ Back to Indiana”, which was done in a country western twang that had that Robbie Fulks signature all over it.

Two acts I would see anywhere again.

7 Steps to Havana-Jazz at 5

Having members from North America and Brazil, the Caribbean and Africa, Seven Steps To Havana possesses a sound that truly brings the world into the music. Lovely boleros, raucous rumbas, swinging sambas, and haunting horn trios, this band soars far and wide across the musical spectrum. They were firing on all cylinders as the Jazz at five series heading indoors to the Overture Center’s lobby atrium. Viviana Pintado (pianist/vocalist)- from Cuba, 3-time Latin Grammy nominee was absolutely brilliant in her playing and singing, exciting the crowd as she took familiar sounding arrangements and changed them to fit the “no stone unturned” approach to this Latin Jazz outfit. The other percussion setting the rhythms were created by Eliezer Freitas-Santos & Rey Rivera, and the bass playing of Yohannes Tona has blasts of Victor Wooten sounding explosions to the wooing jazz back bass beat that mirror the music’s pulse. The horns of Mark Miller (trombone), Bill Simenson (trumpet) & Douglas Little (saxophone/flute/leader) rounded out one frenzied fest of Latin sounds that spread smiles on the faces of those who let the music take them over.

R.I.P. Jim Dickinson

On Saturday, Jim Dickinson left us at age 67. A great piano player, songwriter, arranger and producer who played with so many greats including The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, The North Mississippi Allstars and so many more, passed at his home in Memphis. He will be missed, but not forgotten.

May he rest peacefully.
